A cedar houseboat on Dal Lake, a shikara at first light, the Mughal gardens in flower and three day-trips into meadows and pine valleys. Almost no altitude, almost no hard driving — the easiest beautiful week in India.
If you have one week and want the valley at its most beautiful with the least effort, this is the trip. Nothing above 3,000 m, no drive longer than four hours, and one night on the water that most guests remember longer than anything else.
We use the same three families we have worked with for a decade, on the quieter Nigeen side where possible. You get carved cedar rooms, proper heating and dinner cooked on board.
Houseboat stay, dawn shikara ride, Mughal gardens, the old city shrines, walnut wood and pashmina
The 'meadow of gold', Thajiwas glacier, alpine flowers and the Sindh river
Asia's highest gondola, Khilanmarg meadows, the world's highest golf course, Baba Reshi shrine
Betaab and Aru valleys, Chandanwari, the Lidder river, saffron fields en route
You are met at Srinagar airport with a cup of traditional kahwah and transferred to your houseboat on Dal Lake — carved cedar, wool carpets, a verandah on the water.
In the late afternoon, a shikara ride through the floating gardens and vegetable market to see the lake as its residents do.
Morning at the Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh's twelve terraces, Shalimar Bagh built by Jahangir for Nur Jahan, and Chashme Shahi's spring.
After lunch, the old city — Jamia Masjid's 378 deodar pillars, the Shah Hamdan shrine, and the copper and papier-mâché workshops in the lanes around it. Sunset from Shankaracharya Hill.
After breakfast, drive up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg (2,730 m), stopping at the trout farms and the village of Sarbal.
The Thajiwas glacier is reached by pony or a gentle walk. Return to Srinagar in the evening.
Drive to Gulmarg through rice terraces and willow groves. The gondola climbs in two stages towards Apharwat — phase one to Kongdoori, phase two to 3,979 m if the weather allows.
Afternoon at the Baba Reshi shrine or a walk around the golf course, the highest in the world.
A long, lovely transfer south. En route: the saffron terraces of Pampore, the willow cricket-bat workshops, and the 9th-century sun temple at Avantipora.
Arrive Pahalgam in the afternoon and walk along the Lidder river.
Morning by local union taxi to Chandanwari, Aru village and Betaab Valley — pine, snowmelt and the meadows every Bollywood film of the 1980s was shot in.
Afterwards, transfer to Srinagar airport for your onward flight.
