Tour Overview

Winter is when Ladakh belongs to Ladakhis again. Walk a stretch of the frozen Zanskar, then spend four days with a professional spotting team in Hemis National Park, where the snow leopard density is the highest in the world.

Winter Ladakh is a different country. Daytime highs sit around minus five, nights drop past minus twenty, and the tourist infrastructure of July simply is not there — which is exactly the point.

About the leopards

We do not promise sightings and you should be sceptical of anyone who does. What we can say is that over the last six winters our groups have had a confirmed sighting on roughly three trips in four, and that the blue sheep, wolves and the valley itself are worth the trip regardless.

Tour Highlights

Leh in winter

Empty monasteries, wood smoke, minus twenty at night and unbroken blue days

Rumbak Valley

Homestay with a Ladakhi family in the heart of Hemis National Park

Snow leopard tracking

Four days with spotters and scopes; blue sheep, urial, red fox and Himalayan wolf all likely

Detailed Itinerary

  • Airport transfer to a heated hotel in Leh. Total rest — winter arrival at 3,500 m needs even more respect than summer.

    Heated hotel in Leh Dinner
  • A gentle day: Thiksey and Shey in the morning, gear check and briefing in the afternoon. Rental boots, gaiters and down jackets fitted.

Heated hotel in Leh Breakfast & Dinner
  • Drive down the Indus to Chilling, then descend into the Zanskar gorge and step onto the chadar — the ice sheet. Six kilometres of walking on frozen river to the Tilat Sumdo camp.

Expedition camp on the riverbank Breakfast, lunch & Dinner
  • Walk further up the chadar to Shingra Koma, where the gorge narrows to a slot with frozen waterfalls, then retrace to Chilling and drive back to Leh for a hot shower.

Heated hotel in Leh Breakfast, lunch & Dinner
  • Drive to Zingchen and walk up the Rumbak valley into Hemis National Park. Homestay with a Ladakhi family — thick blankets, bukhari stove, butter tea.

Homestay in Rumbak Breakfast, lunch & Dinner
  • Out with the spotting team at first light to the ridges above the village. Blue sheep and urial are near-certain; the leopards are why you brought a thermos.

Homestay in Rumbak Breakfast, lunch & Dinner
  • A full second day in the field, moving between vantage points as the spotters radio in. Red fox, Himalayan wolf and golden eagle are all regular sightings.

Homestay in Rumbak Breakfast, lunch & Dinner
  • Walk out to Zingchen, drive to Leh and connect to your flight, or add a night if your schedule allows.
